Füssen is a small village at the southern end of the Romantic Road, almost at the Austrian border: in fact, it sits in the shadow of the Austrian Alps. It's an old (dates back to Roman times), charming town, there are lakes close by, so relax with the kids and spend some time here. |
If you're planning to visit Neuschwanstein castle, Füssen is the train stop. From the train station, pick up a short bus ride to Hochenschwangau town and the castles. Or, it's also fun for kids to take a horse-drawn carriage up the mountain. |

Explore the town – Take a walk through the cobblestone streets, lined with colorfully painted buildings. There's a pedestrian street that once was a Roman road, the town fountain with Fussen's patron saint, St. Magnus, fortified towers and city walls, and a monastery that dates to the 9th century. From the bridge, follow the path upstream along the Lech River for a nice stroll. |
