Füssen (Fuessen)

Füssen is a small village at the southern end of the Romantic Road, almost at the Austrian border: in fact, it sits in the shadow of the Bavarian Alps. It's an old (dates back to Roman times), charming town, there are lakes close by, so relax with the kids and spend some time here.
Tip: If you're planning a day trip from Munich to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, Füssen is the train stop. From the train station, pick up a short bus ride to Hochenschwangau town, then go up to the castle. Or, if you have older kids, rent bikes at the train station, and bike to to the castle.

Explore the town – Take a walk through the cobblestone streets, lined with colorfully painted buildings. There's a pedestrian street that once was a Roman road, the town fountain with Fussen's patron saint, St. Magnus, fortified towers and city walls, and a monastery that dates to the 9th century. From the bridge, follow the path upstream along the Lech River for a nice stroll.
