Shasta Cascade

Shasta Cascade, the northeast region of California, is a less well-known part of the state, but it's well worth getting off Interstate 5 to explore the hidden treasures of this area. When we were kids, our favorite was Lassen Volcanic National Park, and it still is with our family – red cinder cones, dormant volcanoes, blurping mud pots, emerald green lakes, and snow balls in summer.

Railroad Park Resort (Dunsmuir) - Where else can kids sleep in a caboose?  In 1968 the Murphy family assembled a collection of railroad passenger cars, locomotives, flat cars, and renovated the cabooses as motel units. The resort has a swimming pool, jacuzzi, dining car restaurant and it's fun for all the railroad fans in your family.

Tip: The resort is accessible by train from San Francisco.  You can take the Amtrak train and get off at the Dunsmuir stop.
