    Lake District
Castlerigg

Castlerigg Stone Circle (Keswick) – Visit the Castlerigg Circle, one of the oldest stone circles in England, ca 3000 BC. The rocks look like Polomoche’s island in Babar and Zephir and it’s just a spectacular setting. You can hike to it from many routes in the area.

Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum (Keswick) – People have mined the stone and ore from Cumbria for centuries. Tour the Threlkeld Quarry where granite was quarried, and find out what it was like to be a miner in the Underground Mine Experience. In the Mining Musem, the Geology Room has a table-top relief map of Lake District geology (very cool). At the gift shop, stock up on mine exploration gear.
Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Farm (Sawrey) – Stop by Beatrix Potter’s 17th century farmhouse where she lived and wrote her beloved children’s books. She observed and drew from nature around her. Bring along The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck or Tom Kitten to compare her drawings with the landscape at Hill Top farm.
Visit The World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness, a well-done exhibit that recreates her characters in the Lake District surroundings.
William Wordsworth’s house(s) (Grasmere) – See the landscape that inspired the poet Wordsworth to write poems such as "I wandered lonely as a cloud." Make an all day excursion to walk to Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, two houses where he wrote poetry and lived for many years.
Lake Windermere Cruises – Take a delightful ride around Lake Windermere on a small steamboat ("steamer"). You can pick them up at Bowness or Ambleside. The trip around the lake provides great views of the mountains, castles and other landmarks on the shore.
Aquarium of the Lakes (Newby Bridge) – This freshwater aquarium specializes in exhibits about the Lake District), including a re-creation of the bottom of Lake Windemere and a water lab of microscopic life in the lake.
From the pier next to the aquarium, take The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway for a steam train excursion to Haverthwaite.
Ullswater

Cruise Ullswater – The Lake District is filled with lovely lakes, and Ullswater is one of the most beautiful. Take a cruise on a 19th century steamer, now powered by oil. Pick up the boat at Glenridding, Howtown, or Pooley Bridge. Combine your cruise with a walk along the southern side of the lake

Muncaster Castle (Ravenglass) – This 13th century caste, built on a Roman foundation, has been owned by the same family for centuries. It’s supposed to be a haunted castle, especially the Tapestry room, and if you look hard, you might even see some faeries floating around the garden. The World Owl Trust, located on the grounds, gives a "Meet the Birds" show daily.

Steam train (Ravenglass) – Take the Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway, a pint-size steam train from Ravenglass through Eskdale. The train was originally designed to carry ore from Eskdale to the coast. The train also stops at the Muncaster Mill, a working water mill where you can see flour being ground.

Poetry for Young People: William Wadsworth

Wordsworth loved the Lake District, and his poems, accompanied by painterly illustrations, bring home the magic of the mountains, lakes, fields and sky, a boy staring pensively into the water, daffodils "fluttering and dancing in the breeze." (Picture book)
